biltong

biltong the history

The word Biltong comes from Dutch words "Bil" meaning buttock and "Tong" meaning strip.carved biltong

Biltong as we know it today, is a much improved version compared to the biltong produced by our pioneering forefathers, who sun dried meat during the "groot trek" across the continent. This spicy, air dried snack, has sustained the People of Southern Africa since the early days of the Voortrekkers. During the "groot trek" North, the Voortrekkers, whilst herding their cattle, would place strips of venison under the saddles on their horses as the chaffing would tenderise the meat and the sweat(salt) of the animals would preserve it! The basic pre-spicing was a blend of vinegar, salt, sugar, coriander and other spices. These were in abundance at the time in the Cape Colony, as the French Huguenots produced wine and vinegar from their grape crops.

chilli stixThankfully, we at Kleyn Begin, do not make our Biltong like this.

Our forefathers started this process and since then we have perfected the process by adding spices and herbs for extra flavours to the meat. Our own secret Biltong recipe is now 3 years old and this not only makes what we think is the best tasting Biltong, but has been proven to be very popular due to its outstanding quality. You can now experience this great taste by clicking the link "contact us" below. We are not the the first to make Biltong in Cape Town, but we think we are definitely the best.

droëwors

droeworsdroëwors is a popular South African Snack Food made by drying the traditional, Coriander-seed spiced Boerewors sausage. It is usually made from dun wors ("thin sausage") rather than dik wors ("thick sausage"), as the thinner sausage dries more quickly and is thus less likely to spoil before it can be preserved.

At Kleyn Begin we decided to go that one extra mile. Instead of just buying the normal "dun wors" at the local supermarket, we invented our own secret recipe. We take great care in choosing the freshest meat to make our very own, great tasting droëwors. No pork fat is added to our meat and you will therefore never get that "fatty feeling" on your palate when you eat our droëwors. We all need a quick, on the road snack from time to time and that is why Kleyn Begin's droëwors is the best choice - So go ahead, we know you want it - just click on "Contact Us" below

Why other products?
When our idea to make Biltong and droëwors was born “Other Products” was not even a thought. We wanted to put all our energy into making a product that would be truly great in taste and quality! Our clients however had other ideas – and why not?

fresh from the sea

snoekAt Kleyn Begin we all love Fish. Good "brain-food", the Old-folk always used to tell us. For the people in the Cape Province, fish is second nature. For some just looking at beautiful fish is enough, but for others catching fish is meditation and relaxation.

A fish product that is always greatly in demand is Snoek and Smoked Snoek. We use real Oak Shavings to smoke the Snoek to a golden brown perfection. No colorants are used on our fish.

A variety of Smoked Snoek Patè is also available. This makes a delicious filling on toast and fresh bread or biscuits. Preparation time takes a while, so make sure to order at least 3 days before you will need it.

There is nothing as mouth watering as a Snoek braaiing on the coals (can you smell it?). We can supply a Fresh Snoek for just such an occasion.

from the butchery

rump steakFrom the Butchery was an obvious choice. We tested the idea of providing fresh lean Steak mince and Steak Boerewors to our family and friends. So while we were preparing the meat to make our succulent biltong, we used the off-cut steak and minced it to make Boerewors and Mince. It was an instant hit. Friends, Family and now also our Community, enjoys a quality product at an affordable price.

dried fruit and nuts

Dried Fruit and Nuts was high in demand. The Biltong Shop Owners wanted to add something different to spice up their clients lives – what better than a variety of dried fruit and nuts. We sourced the products and it is now available to everybody.

honeyhoney

Oh so pure and sweet.. The temptation was too strong to resist. My sweet tooth won this round so I decided to add this to my list of delicacies. How many of you really think when eating honey where it comes from and how many bees it would take to make 500g honey!

Since our Biltong and other products are mainly manufactured on order, pricing is directly linked to the meat/fish price at the time. Prices available on this website is therefore subject to change.
